AB Arts Days

In partnership with the Wetaskiwin Library and the Wetaskiwin Jazz Society, Kodi Hutchinson and I will be giving workshops at Clear Vista School on September 29 / 30 as a part of the AB Arts Days celebration weekend. www.affta.ab.ca

Alberta Foundation for the Arts Board of Directors Appointment



I have just been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts!! This is a 3 year term and starts immediately.

For those of you who are Albertan, my door (and inbox) is always open and I look forward to discussing anything and everything about the AFA with you. Please be in touch at any time regarding the organization to my contact info below.

For those of you who don't know about the AFA: it is run through the Culture and Community Spirit ministry in the Government of Alberta. 'The Foundation exists to fund, encourage, and support the development of arts as a valuable contributor to quality of life in Alberta, and to maintain and expand the AFA art collection as a strategic resource for all Albertans.'

The 3rd annual Wetaskiwin Jazz Camp has just wrapped up...



...and it was a resounding success! The students were amazing once again and the faculty were inspiring. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this special year and supported us. The 2012 Wetaskiwin Jazz Camp will be July 8-13, 2012 in Wetaskiwin. We are very excited to announce multiple Grammy nominee Rogério Boccato from Brazil/NYC as our Special Guest Artist!

Very happy to announce that my 2nd CD, 1+4, has just been nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award in the 'Jazz Recording of the Year' category!! Thanks to everyone that was a part of this exciting project.  This is the 2nd year in a row one of my CDs has been nominated.

March Update - March 14, 2011

Just finished an absolutely fantastic tour of Northern BC with the Hutchinson Andrew featuring Kodi Hutchinson and Chris Gestrin!  Beautiful week, great people and wonderful music.  Look forward to being up there again some day!

I'm giving a masterclass this Friday at 3pm at UofT's Faculty of Music in the Boyd Neel Room.


Radio Charts and Tour wrap up - February 28, 2011

Our new Cd '1+4' was number one this past week on Canadian Jazz Radio charts!  Thanks to everyone for all their support.

Another tour is in the books and the Jazz-in-Schools was fantastic this past week!  Thousands of smiling students and wonderful teachers and support staff.  This year's theme was teamwork and next year's theme will be 'Communication'.  Look forward to it!

VFTF mini-tour Finished - January 18, 2011

Another January and another awesome tour with the Visions from the Farm Quartet (Chris Andrew, Kodi Hutchinson, Brent Mah).  We visited a few new cities and venues, which is always refreshing.  Thanks to everyone who supported us the past couple of weeks...we'll see you next time!


New CD '1+4' is now Available! - January 18, 2011



Very excited to announce that my new CD '1+4: Karl Schwonik Jazz Ensemble avec/with Rémi Bolduc' is now available online!  See the 'Buy CD's' section of this website for more info.  1+4 features: Rémi Bolduc, James Davis, Chris Andrew and Kodi Hutchinson.  The recording was made live at the Nancy Appleby Theatre in Athabasca in July 2010.

The CD was already #1 on the charts at CJSR 88.5 in Edmonton for the week of January 18!
